LWAAAC began as a small group of like-minded individuals who wanted to make a positive impact in their community.
On September 8, 1993, eight African American Leisure World residents came together to find a way to identify and establish a connection with other African Americans in the community. They created a survey that was mailed to the 60 African Americans identified as residents of Leisure World.
On November 2, 1993, those eight residents held their first meet up in the community room of The Greens, Building 4. This initial event resulted in 50 African Americans joining the eight residents in their quest to unite and support their community. As a result of this gathering, the “Leisure World Association for African American Culture (LWAAAC)” was born. The founding eight members served as the executive committee.
In keeping with the Leisure World requirements for establishing a club or organization, documentation was gathered and LWAAAC sent a letter to the Leisure World of Maryland Corporation on July 15, 1994, requesting approval of our newly formed organization.
LWAAAC became a recognized Leisure World of Maryland organization on October 4, 1994 and in 1995, established a board of officers (president, vice president, recording secretary, correspondence secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian) and committee chairs (programs, membership, social, amenities, fireside forum, and publicity). Membership dues were set at $15 per person.
At LWAAAC, we strive to create a welcoming community that promotes diversity, inclusivity, and respect for all. Our mission is to provide a space where members can connect, learn, grow together, while giving back and paying it forward.
The LWAAAC Drum Circle will host this spirited program that will educate, enlighten, and inspire as we embrace the seven principles of life filled with words of intention, movement, and music.
