The Community Services Committee initiates and implements community service projects and activities to support a specific need of a predetermined community group in the Montgomery County area. We engage with local schools and community support organizations to assist in achieving their goals.
Our projects

As a proud and active community, the LWAAAC has always demonstrated a commitment to supporting local educational initiatives and empowering our youth. We invite you to continue this legacy by contributing to the Blake High School Scholarship Fund.
Blake High School is home to many talented and ambitious students who strive for academic excellence and personal growth. However, financial barriers can limit their opportunities to pursue higher education and realize their full potential. By donating to the scholarship fund, you will help deserving students overcome these challenges and open doors to brighter futures.
Your support matters. Even a modest contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of Blake High students. The scholarship fund will be used to assist graduating seniors with college tuition, books, and other educational expenses. Together, we can ensure that financial constraints do not stand in the way of our community’s next generation of leaders.
How to Donate:
Our mission is to support financially underprivileged students in Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) to help them succeed to their fullest ability and to gain fuller access to the range of experiences that public education has to offer.
The involved school has been the James Hubert (Eubie) Blake HS. This year we gave a donation to the Sister Mentors program and plan to donate to the Bel Pre ES and the Benjamin Banneker MS.
For the Eubie Blake HS scholarships, students must be a participant in the Free or Reduced Lunch Program, have at least a 2.0 GPA and have been accepted in a community or 4 year college. Proof of enrollment is required from the school.
When we receive the college confirmation of enrollment, we send the check to the school. The student is notified of the scholarship award at the HS awards ceremony.
So for the past 2 years we have awarded $1000 scholarships to 2 students each year.
Under its Educational Assistance Program, in partnership with the James Hubert (“Eubie”) Blake High School in Cloverly, MD, LWAAAC presented $1,000 scholarships to two Blake graduating seniors on the evening of May 21. Elise Nicholls, accompanied by Jeanne Markray and Al Holston, presented the scholarship certificates to Jayla James and Constantin Bell.
Both graduates have distinguished themselves academically and athletically. Ms. James plans to attend Prince George’s County Community College and major in business management. Her goals are to earn a real estate license and own her own business. Mr. Bell will attend Temple University, where he, too, will major in business with a minor in real estate.

The Community Service Committee has joined with the Leisure World New Yorkers & Friends organization as volunteers to the Strathmore Elementary School on Beaverbrook Rd. Our volunteers are serving as Recess Door Monitors, which is a continuous need throughout the school year. Time slots are for about an hour and 10 minutes.
Anyone wishing to volunteer, please contact:
Linda Mahler, coordinator

The purpose of the Grand Readers Program is to allow grandparents or other senior citizens to come into elementary or middle schools to read to students, working on the child’s literacy, assist students with reading assignments and after school programs.
Any member who wishes to participate must contact the program director to be interviewed, give references and be willing to be fingerprinted by MC.
To be a volunteer in any of the other programs members should contact Juanita Sealy-Williams and complete the following:

At Shepherd’s Table, we aim to improve quality of life, create a pathway towards self-sufficiency, and inspire hope for the most vulnerable in our community. We welcome every individual who walks through our door—a population experiencing food insecurity, homelessness, and poverty. Our fresh, delicious meals are curated by professional chefs and designed to maximize nutrition. But it doesn’t end with food– through case management and each program we offer, a fresh meal can be the entry point to a larger journey of healing and empowerment.
LWAAAC members volunteer to help prepare, serve, or clean up after the daily meals. Members who wish to volunteer must first register on the Shepherd's Table volunteer hub and select the type and time of service they wish to give.
